Harlaxton Manor is one of the grandest houses in England, a spectacular Jacobethan and Baroque manor begun in 1831 near Grantham in Lincolnshire, set in 300 acres. Given to a single wedding on a limited number of dates a year, it offers opulent state rooms, the Great Hall with its marble floor, the carved Cedar Staircase, the Long Gallery and the gilded Gold Room, and dramatic terraced Baroque gardens, a setting of a grandeur very few venues in the country can match.
Harlaxton Manor is one of the most spectacular houses in England, a vast Jacobethan and Baroque manor begun in 1831 for Gregory Gregory, who poured a fortune into building a house to rival the great Elizabethan prodigy houses. It stands in 300 acres near Grantham in Lincolnshire, its skyline a riot of pinnacles and gables, its interiors among the most opulent of Victorian England. Harlaxton is also, less obviously, the British campus of the University of Evansville, a study-abroad site since 1971, which is why weddings are held on only a limited number of dates a year, scheduled around the academic calendar, and given entirely to a single couple.
The state rooms are the point. The Great Hall, with its black-and-white marble floor beneath a carved screen and chandelier; the astonishing Cedar Staircase, rising through tiers of Baroque woodwork; the Long Gallery, with its painted ceiling, chandeliers and grand piano; and the gilded Gold Room, its ceiling painted, its walls gold. Couples marry in these rooms, dine beneath their ceilings, and dance in their grandeur, in a house that photographs like a film set because it has been one.
Outside lie the dramatic terraced gardens, Italianate and Baroque, with statuary, balustraded steps, a garden pavilion and the long reflecting canal that frames the house. Accommodation for a wedding is at hotels nearby in Grantham and the Lincolnshire countryside, and Harlaxton is easy to reach, about ten minutes from Grantham, seventy from London by train. It is a wedding for couples who want unabashed grandeur, and one of the finest houses in the country to have it in.

Catering is fine and seasonal, in-house or from an approved list, and the drinks reception spills onto the terraces and into the Baroque gardens, with the celebration carrying the grandeur of the rooms into the night.
