About Hampton Court Palace

The Tudor and Baroque royal palace of Henry VIII on the Thames, hired for genuinely royal weddings.

Hampton Court Palace is the Tudor and Baroque royal palace of Cardinal Wolsey and Henry VIII on the River Thames at East Molesey, run by Historic Royal Palaces and hired for weddings and events. Couples marry in the Garden Room orangery and its walled garden, in the riverside Little Banqueting House with its Verrio ceilings, or, by evening exclusive hire, in the medieval Great Hall beneath Henry VIII's hammerbeam roof, then celebrate through the state apartments, the Historic Kitchens and 60 acres of formal gardens.

Hampton Court Palace is one of the great royal houses of England, begun by Cardinal Wolsey around 1515, seized and enlarged by Henry VIII, and given its Baroque wings by Sir Christopher Wren for William III and Mary II. It stands on the River Thames at East Molesey, a red-brick Tudor front, a Wren facade and 60 acres of formal gardens, and it is run today by the charity Historic Royal Palaces, which hires it for weddings and events.

There are three ways to marry here. The Garden Room is a light 1920s orangery set in its own private walled garden, licensed for civil ceremonies, drinks, dinner and dancing, a wedding in one beautiful room and its garden. The Little Banqueting House is a hidden Baroque pavilion built over the Thames, its ceilings painted by Antonio Verrio, for an intimate ceremony and reception of up to fifty. And by evening exclusive hire, the palace itself is yours, to marry in the medieval Great Hall beneath the last hammerbeam roof built for an English king.

It is a dry hire, which is the point. The palace hands you the rooms and the gardens, a list of approved caterers and suppliers, and the freedom to shape the day entirely: a civil ceremony in the Great Hall for up to 200, a wedding breakfast for 220 beneath the tapestries, drinks in the state apartments or the Tudor kitchens, and the Privy Garden and Great Fountain Garden for photographs at golden hour. There are no bedrooms, so guests stay at The Mitre at the gates and hotels nearby, but few places on earth can offer a wedding this genuinely royal, this close to London.

Rooms & Accommodation

A royal events venue; the palace and its gardens are yours, with accommodation at hotels nearby.

A royal events venue with no bedrooms; guests stay at The Mitre at the palace gates and hotels in East Molesey and Kingston-upon-Thames

Hampton Court Palace is an events venue rather than a hotel, so the palace and its gardens are the couple's for the celebration: the Great Hall for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, the Garden Room and its walled garden, the riverside Little Banqueting House, the Baroque state apartments and Cartoon Gallery for receptions, and Henry VIII's Historic Kitchens and undercroft for the evening. There are no bedrooms on site, so guests stay at The Mitre by the palace gates and at hotels in East Molesey and Kingston-upon-Thames, a short way across the bridge.

Dining at Hampton Court Palace is a dry hire with a list of approved caterers, which makes the food as flexible as the setting, from a formal seated wedding breakfast in the Great Hall to a lavish multicultural banquet, with full dietary and cultural catering including halal and kosher menus. The wedding breakfast is served beneath the hammerbeam roof and the Tudor tapestries, drinks flow through the state apartments and the gardens, and Henry VIII's Historic Kitchens, where the palace team still recreates period recipes, give the evening a setting no other venue can offer.
