Some historic wedding venues gesture at the past. Auckland Castle is the past, still standing and still working. For nearly nine hundred years this was the seat of the Prince Bishops of Durham, prince-rulers who held their own court and governed the border country between England and Scotland, and today, restored by The Auckland Project, the bishop's palace opens as a heritage attraction and a wedding venue that hands a couple a piece of English history entire.

The panelled hall is hung with Francisco de Zurbaran's Jacob and his Twelve Sons, a rare seventeenth-century Spanish cycle of near-life-size patriarchs that has looked down on dinners here for nearly three centuries. To dine beneath them, candlelit along the length of the room, is to eat inside a museum that happens to be yours for the night.

Catering is by a list of approved caterers rather than a single kitchen, which makes the palace one of the more flexible historic venues in the North for a wedding that does not fit a template, a lavish banquet, a specific cultural or dietary menu, a particular chef the couple loves. The scale of the State Rooms and the Long Dining Room suits a big, generous, celebratory feast.

And the palace is not only its rooms. Behind it lie the restored walled gardens and a historic deer park, formal borders and mature trees and the arcaded wall of the castle beyond, for drinks receptions, photographs and the quiet moments between the set-pieces.
