Or the fact that in July and August, the narrow lanes of Oia are so crowded by sunset that the experience of watching that famous light fall across the caldera has become, for many couples, more performance than observation. Santorini is still extraordinary. It is simply no longer undiscovered.

Which is why the most thoughtful wedding planners working in Greece are increasingly pointing their clients elsewhere. Not away from the Greek islands, but deeper into them — toward the Cyclades, the Ionian chain, the Dodecanese — toward the Greece that has been there all along, waiting for people who were willing to look.

It would be dishonest to write about Greek island weddings and dismiss Santorini. For couples who have dreamed of that specific caldera view since before they knew each other, the island still delivers something that cannot be replicated anywhere else on earth. The approach by ferry as the caldera comes into view, the sensation of looking out from a terrace built into the cliff face, the particular quality of the evening light as it strikes the volcanic rock — these experiences justify the logistical complexity.

The key is timing and positioning. May and early June offer the light without the August crush. The southern villages of Akrotiri and Vlychada are quieter than Oia and Fira, with their own drama and a more local character. And the finest private villas on the island, available for exclusive hire, create a bubble of genuine privacy that the public terraces cannot provide.

Mykonos has spent three decades cultivating a reputation for a particular kind of hedonism — the beach clubs, the DJs, the sunset bars — and it would be wrong to pretend this is not part of what makes the island appealing. But behind the party infrastructure lies something more interesting: a landscape of extraordinary light, extraordinary architecture, and a food culture that has been quietly becoming one of the finest in Greece.

The most significant wedding venues on Mykonos use the island's iconic Cycladic architecture as their framework: low-slung white buildings, geometric lines, terraces that step down toward the sea. Within this framework, some of the world's most sophisticated event designers are creating celebrations that bear almost no resemblance to the beach-club aesthetic. The contrast — the wild parties of Psarou beach visible in the distance while you eat a twelve-course dinner in a converted windmill — is, for the right couple, precisely the point.

The Ionian islands, off the western coast of mainland Greece, occupy an entirely different register. Kefalonia and Zakynthos are dramatic and lush; Corfu is aristocratic, shaped by centuries of Venetian influence that left behind a cuisine and an architecture unlike anything else in Greece. Lefkada, connected to the mainland by a causeway, has some of the finest beaches in Europe and almost none of Santorini's crowds.

In the Aegean, Paros and Naxos offer a version of Cycladic beauty that feels lived-in rather than staged. The marble quarries of Naxos supplied material for ancient temples; the island's interior is a landscape of Byzantine towers and villages that have barely changed in five centuries. For couples who want a Greek island wedding that their guests will describe as undiscovered, these are the islands to consider.

Greece requires a local planner. This is not a polite suggestion; it is a practical necessity. The paperwork for a legally recognised ceremony on a Greek island involves interactions with local municipalities, the Greek Orthodox Church, and civil authorities that can only be navigated by someone who knows the specific requirements of each island and has the relationships to make them run smoothly.

The season matters enormously. May to mid-June and September to mid-October offer the best combination of weather, light, and manageable tourist numbers. July and August are high season; the light is still extraordinary, but the logistical and financial premiums are significant. October, on the islands that remain open, offers perhaps the single most beautiful light of the year, the last warmth of summer in air that has begun to cool, and a quality of amber afternoon light that photographers speak of in reverent tones.
