Tenuta San Masseo: A Wedding Below the Hilltop of Assisi, Umbria

The estate hosts one wedding at a time. The garden, the Masseo Vista Cube glass marquee, the private spa, the outdoor pool and all 12 rooms belong to the couple and their guests for the length of the celebration. There is no neighbouring wedding, no shared corridor. The feeling is closer to renting a private Umbrian estate than to booking a venue.

Symbolic ceremonies are held in the garden, where the flower arch faces the Assisi skyline. Couples choosing a legal marriage make the short journey to Assisi town hall or the basilicas of the town, then return to the estate. Either way, the photographs exist: a couple, an arch, and the whole hilltop of Assisi arranged behind them as if by design.

Twelve rooms and suites, each named after an olive variety grown on the estate, sleep up to 36 guests on site, so the wedding party can stay together on the hillside below Assisi. The private spa, outdoor pool and panoramic glass bar are at hand throughout the celebration, and additional accommodation is available at hotels nearby, within walking distance, for the rest of a larger guest list.

The reception moves to the Masseo Vista Cube, a glass marquee open to the Umbrian hills, for up to 250 guests. La Locanda del Cardinale, the estate's culinary partner, brings traditional Umbrian show cooking: wood-fired pizza, long dinners drawn from the local land. The evening ends with fireworks, the cake and dancing as the lights of Assisi glow above.
