Some London weddings want a country house. This one wants the city, at its most glamorous. The London EDITION, Ian Schrager and Marriott's five-star hotel behind a Grade II Georgian facade in Fitzrovia, is where a wedding trades lawns and long drives for salon-hung walls, silver sculpture and a rooftop over the West End, and gets the drama and polish only a great city hotel can give.

The room everyone comes for is Berners Tavern. Jason Atherton's restaurant occupies a soaring former ballroom, its walls hung salon-style with hundreds of framed pictures beneath a vast, ornate plaster ceiling, and it is, by common agreement, one of the most beautiful dining rooms in London. Set for a wedding breakfast, long tables running its length under that ceiling, it needs almost no dressing: the room is the decoration.

Around it, the hotel gives a wedding a sequence of glamorous rooms. The lobby lounge, chequerboard-floored beneath silver egg sculptures and a stone fireplace, is where drinks begin; the Punch Room, an intimate, wood-panelled cocktail bar that regularly ranks among the world's best, is where the evening loosens; and a rooftop terrace, lit with lanterns at dusk, is where the photographs and the late drinks happen, with Fitzrovia spread out below.

Because it is a hotel, and a large one, the logistics dissolve. There are 173 warm oak-panelled rooms and suites upstairs, from serene neutrals to a walnut-lined Penthouse, so the wedding party sleeps under one roof and stumbles home up a lift rather than into a taxi. The kitchen caters, the Punch Room mixes the drinks, and the whole of central London, Soho, the West End, Oxford Circus, is a few minutes' walk in any direction.

It suits a particular kind of couple: the ones who want their wedding to feel like the best night out they have ever thrown, in the most glamorous room in town, rather than a garden party in the country. Intimate is where it shines, a ceremony and a long, candlelit dinner in Berners Tavern, cocktails that run late, guests who never have to leave, but the polish scales, and the EDITION knows exactly how to throw a party.
