Broadoaks was built in 1836 on the hillside above the Trout Beck, two miles out of Windermere. Seven acres of garden and woodland fall away from it toward the river. The Music Room came in 1905, designed with inspiration from William Morris. Weddings are exclusive use as standard, the kitchen and bar are the house's own, and there is no sound limiter, which in the Lake District is rarer than it sounds.

Most couples marry outdoors at the white Victorian gazebo, dressed with blossom trees or with burgundy and blush against the garden borders, guests seated on the lawn and the fells beyond. Indoor ceremonies are held in the Orangery. Broadoaks is listed on Westmorland and Furness Council's directory of approved premises, which confirms the indoor licence; the venue also states it is licensed for ceremonies outside, and that outdoor position is the venue's own claim rather than a published council fact, so confirm it with Broadoaks and the registrar before you fix a date. Broadoaks puts it plainly: there is no decibel limiter, so a band or a DJ can play at the volume they were hired for. Anyone who has planned a wedding in the Lake District knows how unusual that sentence is. The trade is a firm end: the bar closes and all music stops at midnight, with a paid upgrade to 1am if you want it. Sparklers are welcome outside, and the rules on fireworks, fire pits, confetti cannons and smoke machines are a flat no.

Windermere station is a five-minute taxi, which makes the venue unusually easy for guests coming by train from Manchester, Lancaster or Glasgow. Manchester Airport is about an hour and a half by road, 89 miles. A helicopter arrival is possible by prior arrangement with a signed indemnity form.
