Trastevere is the neighbourhood Rome keeps to itself. Its streets, narrower than they look on any map, amber-orange in the late afternoon, are largely unchanged from the medieval warren that surrounded the convent when Borromini built it. The Tiber is three minutes on foot. The Gianicolo hill, with its panorama over the city, is a ten-minute walk.
