Hever, Kent

A castle where history was made.

Hever Castle is a double-moated castle begun in the 13th century and the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, restored by William Waldorf Astor with celebrated Italian Gardens beside a lake. Couples marry in the Astor Wing's Tudor Suite, in the panelled Inner Hall of the castle, or out in the garden by the water, and stay the night in two historic bed and breakfast wings beside the moat.

A Ceremony Inside the Castle.

Couples marry in three settings at Hever. In the Astor Wing, the Tudor Suite Sitting Room is licensed for the ceremony and the Dining Room set for the wedding breakfast, for up to 60. In the castle itself, the richly carved Inner Hall holds the ceremony and the Great Hall the banquet, beneath the Minstrels Gallery and the Boleyn arms. And in the Italian Garden, the Loggia stands beside the lake for a ceremony or drinks in the open air, before an evening reception in the Moat Restaurant, a tipi or the Guthrie Pavilion.

Catering is by the estate's own kitchens, seasonal modern British menus from £92.50 per person, with a complimentary tasting for the couple. Wedding breakfasts are served in the Tudor Suite Dining Room for up to 60 or on the long banqueting tables of the castle Great Hall, beneath portraits and carved ceilings, with linen, china and glassware included and full dietary catering.

Beyond the castle, William Waldorf Astor laid out one of the finest Italian gardens in England: a columned Loggia and piazza beside a 38-acre lake, statuary and pergolas heavy with roses and wisteria, and walks that make a wedding here as much about the grounds as the rooms. Couples take photographs among the topiary and archways, and the Loggia hosts a lakeside ceremony or reception with the water spread out beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hever Castle

It is a double-moated castle begun in the 13th century and the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, so a wedding here takes place inside one of the most famous stories in English history, in rooms restored and Italian Gardens laid out by William Waldorf Astor around the medieval keep.

You can marry in the Astor Wing's Tudor Suite, in the castle's carved Inner Hall, or in the Italian Garden Loggia by the lake, then dine in the Tudor Suite Dining Room or the Great Hall, and celebrate into the evening in the Moat Restaurant, a garden tipi or the Guthrie Pavilion.

Yes. On select dates a Castle wedding offers a ceremony in the Inner Hall of Italian walnut and a wedding breakfast on the long banqueting tables of the Great Hall, beneath the Minstrels Gallery and the Boleyn coat of arms, for a supplement from £1,000.

Hever's award-winning Italian Gardens, laid out by the Astors in the early 1900s, run beside a 38-acre lake, with a columned Loggia and piazza, statuary and pergolas heavy with roses and wisteria, making the grounds as much a part of the day as the rooms.

There are 18 bed and breakfast bedrooms in the Astor Wing and, subject to availability, 9 more in the Anne Boleyn Wing, plus Medley Court, a self-catering cottage sleeping up to eight, so the wedding party can stay the night beside the moat and gardens.

Catering is by the estate's own kitchens, seasonal modern British menus from £92.50 per person with drinks packages from £53.50, a complimentary tasting for the couple, and children's, canapé and evening buffet options, served beneath portraits and carved ceilings.

Up to 60 for a ceremony and wedding breakfast in the Tudor Suite, or 40 in the castle Great Hall, and up to 120 in the Moat Restaurant or 220 in the Guthrie Pavilion for an evening reception, with a minimum of 25 adults.

It feels like stepping into history: vows in a panelled Tudor room or beside a lake, a banquet beneath the Boleyn arms, photographs among the Italian Gardens and topiary, fireworks or sparklers after dark, and the whole party staying the night by a moated medieval castle.
