Kew, Surrey

The smallest royal palace.

Kew Palace is Britain's smallest royal palace, a red-brick Georgian house within the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, once the family home of King George III and Queen Charlotte. Hired on an exclusive-use basis for intimate weddings, it offers a ceremony in the State Rooms, a candlelit dinner in the Georgian Royal Kitchens, and summer drinks in the enclosed Queen's Garden.

Weddings at Kew Palace

A Ceremony in the State Rooms.

Couples marry in the Georgian State Rooms, the King's Dining Room or the Queen's Drawing Room, panelled and hung with old master paintings and lit by candlelight, then move to the Royal Kitchens for a wedding dinner among the open ranges and whitewashed vaults. In summer the enclosed Queen's Garden opens for drinks beneath the red-brick walls, a small, complete royal wedding from vows to reception.

The Table

A Candlelit Dinner in the Royal Kitchens.

Dining is arranged on a dry-hire basis with approved caterers, so the menu is built around the couple, from a seasonal British wedding breakfast to a table shaped by a particular tradition, with full dietary and cultural catering. The dinner is most memorably set in the Georgian Royal Kitchens, the long scrubbed tables and open range lit by candlelight, where cooks once prepared royal banquets.

The Queen's Garden

A Seventeenth-Century Garden, Enclosed.

Immediately behind the palace lies the Queen's Garden, laid out in seventeenth-century style with a parterre of clipped box, a central fountain, a raised gazebo and a sunken garden, planted with the herbs and flowers a Stuart household would have known. Enclosed by high hedges and the red-brick walls of the palace, it is a private, formal, faintly secret place, and in summer it opens for a wedding's drinks and photographs, the fountain playing and the palace glowing behind.
