Syon Park is the London estate of the Duke of Northumberland, held by the Percy family since 1594. Weddings take place across Syon House, with its Robert Adam interiors, and the Grade I Great Conservatory, a glasshouse of the late 1820s, in 200 acres of Capability Brown parkland by the Thames. Most weddings borrow their grandeur. Here it is inherited, twenty minutes from central London and entirely screened from it.

Couples marry in the Great Hall, beneath Robert Adam's coffered half-dome, for as many as 154 guests according to the venue's brochure, or in the more intimate State Dining Room for up to 50. Drinks follow in the Inner Courtyard, dinner in the Great Hall or out under the glass of the Great Conservatory, and dancing in the Colonnade. The Conservatory is an evening venue and runs April to September, when the last of the daylight comes down through the roof and is replaced, almost without a seam, by candlelight.

Dinner Under the Dome, or the Glass.

Catering runs through the estate's approved suppliers, a short roster of established London houses who know the building. Dinner is served in the Great Hall beneath the coffered dome or, in season, out in the Great Conservatory under the glass, with drinks in the Inner Courtyard and the Colonnade given over to dancing. No outside caterers are brought in; menus are built with each couple through the chosen house.

Around the house lie 200 acres of parkland laid out by Capability Brown, the meadows running down to the Thames opposite Kew Gardens. The ground is older than the house: a Bridgettine abbey stood here first, its foundation stone laid by Henry the Fifth in 1415, and the Percys have held the estate since 1594. Syon Woods Lawn, four open acres, gives a marquee option in the grounds. Little at Syon is invented for weddings. It was all here already.

Syon Park sits in Brentford in west London, screened by its own parkland yet genuinely of the city. Kew Gardens is directly across the Thames, Heathrow is about twenty minutes west and central London roughly the same to the east, with Syon Lane and Brentford rail stations close by. Guests can come for the evening and be home the same night, which for a venue of this grandeur is unusually easy.
