The Wallace Collection holds one of the great collections of European art in the world, in a townhouse on a Marylebone square. From 18:30 it is hired exclusively for a single wedding: a symbolic blessing in the Great Gallery, dinner among the Old Masters, dancing under the glass roof of the Courtyard, and an afterparty for 300. The public have gone home. The paintings have not.

A Blessing Beneath the Old Masters.

Couples hold a symbolic blessing in the Great Gallery for up to 140 seated, and typically complete the legal marriage beforehand at Old Marylebone Town Hall, a few minutes away. The room does the work: crimson damask floor to ceiling, gilt frames stacked to the cornice, a top-lit vault above. Guests arrive up the marble Grand Staircase, drinks are poured through the silk-lined state rooms, and dinner follows in the Gallery or the Courtyard.

Dry Hire, and Everything That Allows.

There is no in-house kitchen. Catering comes from an accredited supplier list, with Tony Page for kosher and Laguna for Asian catering, so the wedding breakfast can be a formal English service, a South Asian feast or a kosher banquet without a compromise on either side. Tables are laid for 160 in the Great Gallery or 140 in the Courtyard.

A Townhouse That Became a Museum.

Hertford House stands on the north side of Manchester Square behind a red brick and stone facade and a stone portico, a private London house that became a national museum and kept the manners of both. Inside, the state rooms run in an enfilade of blue and crimson silk, the Grand Staircase carries a gilded wrought-iron balustrade brought from Paris, and the old courtyard has been roofed in glass and turned into the lightest room in the building. There is no garden. On a square this quiet, nobody misses one.

The Wallace Collection sits on Manchester Square, a garden square just north of Oxford Street and a few minutes from Marylebone High Street. Bond Street tube is a seven minute walk, Marylebone and Paddington stations are close, and Heathrow is around forty minutes by car. Hotels of every kind sit within a short walk in Marylebone and the West End, which matters at a venue with no bedrooms of its own.

Wedding packages at The Wallace Collection start at £18,000 including VAT, for drinks in the Drawing Room Suite followed by dinner and dance for 140 in the glass-roofed Courtyard, and rise through £21,600, £22,800 and £24,000 as the evening grows. Hire is out of hours, from 18:30 to midnight, with an extension to 01:00 available at £3,600 subject to a Temporary Event Notice. Catering is dry hire from an accredited supplier list, so the menu is chosen rather than inherited.
