Bickleigh Castle is one of Devon's most romantic wedding venues: a centuries-old fortified castle set beside the river Exe near Tiverton, with an ancient detached chapel, one of the oldest in Devon, a moat, thatched Grade II listed cottages and gardens of rhododendrons and topiary. Twenty minutes from the M5 yet utterly secluded, it carries the romance of a real castle steeped in history.
Taken on an exclusive-use basis, the whole castle becomes the couple's own. Ceremonies are held in the beamed Great Hall, licensed for up to 120 beneath its Minstrels' Gallery and roaring log fire, or outdoors on the gazebo lawn with the Devon hills beyond; the ancient chapel hosts blessings and humanist ceremonies. The Banqueting Room then seats 40 to 120 for the wedding breakfast, with five-star dining, and 18 bedrooms and suites across the castle and cottages sleep up to 40, so the whole party stays together. Gardens, a moat, the river and even a tennis court complete a characterful, romantic Devon castle wedding.
