About Clearwell Castle

A Georgian Gothic castle in the Forest of Dean, exclusively yours for one wedding a day.

Clearwell Castle is a Georgian Gothic Revival castle hidden in the Forest of Dean, begun in 1727 for Thomas Wyndham to the designs of Roger Morris and Grade II* listed. Run for exclusive-use weddings, one a day, couples marry in the Ballroom beneath leaded lancet windows, or outdoors at the garden Bandstand with the castle behind, then celebrate a wedding breakfast for up to 150 and an evening party for up to 250 across 20 acres of grounds, with castle bedrooms for the wedding party.

Clearwell Castle is one of the most romantic castle wedding venues in Gloucestershire, a Georgian Gothic Revival house hidden in the Forest of Dean and begun in 1727 for Thomas Wyndham. Designed by Roger Morris, it is the earliest Georgian Gothic Revival castle in England, predating better-known houses such as Strawberry Hill by more than twenty years, and it is Grade II* listed. Castellated towers, pointed arches and leaded windows give it the look of a fortress and the comfort of a country house at once.

The castle is run for exclusive-use weddings, one a day, which means the whole house and its grounds are yours. Ceremonies take place inside the Ballroom, with its 75-foot aisle, leaded lancet windows, hardwood floors and a raised dais for signing the register, or outdoors at the garden Bandstand, set among the flower beds with the castle as a backdrop. Afterwards the celebration spreads across 20 acres of grounds, a cocktail terrace and a croquet lawn, with an evening party for up to 250.

Dining is by the castle's own kitchen, seasonal wedding breakfasts for up to 150 served beneath the Ballroom chandeliers. Castle bedrooms sleep up to 34, including family suites and the Gresham Honeymoon Suite, and a further 24 bedrooms a short stroll away at The Wyndham hold the wider party, so a wedding at Clearwell becomes a whole weekend in a castle of your own. Part of the family-run Country House Weddings group, it has been making castle weddings for over thirty years.
