Le Petit Versailles of the French Riviera: a Second Empire château built by the Grasse perfumer Léon Chiris, visited by Queen Victoria, set in a 3-hectare park above the bay of Cannes.
A 19th-century Second Empire château in the hills above Grasse, the perfume capital of the world, coined Le Petit Versailles for its gold-leaf boiserie and palatial salons. Built by the perfumer Léon Chiris and once visited by Queen Victoria, it offers exclusive-use weddings for up to 100 guests across a 3-hectare park, with 9 rooms and suites, Villa Norah, a heated indoor pool, and commanding views over the bay of Cannes. Dry hire permitted.
Château Saint Georges stands in the hills above Grasse, the perfume capital of the world, with commanding views over the bay of Cannes and the medieval town below. Coined Le Petit Versailles of the French Riviera, it was built in the second half of the 19th century by Léon Chiris, the fourth generation of one of the great perfumery dynasties of Grasse, in the elegant Second Empire style and named for his son George. In April 1891, during her month-long stay in Grasse, Queen Victoria was welcomed by Léon Chiris and returned often, contemplating, as the Journal of Grasse recorded, the wonderful panorama of the Grasse valley from the terrace that surrounds the grounds. Today the château sits within a gated 3-hectare park, its salons restored with boiserie in gold leaf and silk jacquard Lyonnaise: the Salon Napoléon, the Salon Bleu, the Library, and the Grande Cuisine. The domain holds formal gardens with a Temple of Love, a heated indoor swimming pool, nine individually styled rooms and suites including the Royal Apartments, and the separate Villa Norah, sleeping the wedding party in all. The château is hired exclusively for one wedding, with private catering and dry hire permitted, five minutes from Grasse and thirty-five minutes from Nice.
