Castello di Petrata: A Medieval Fortress Wedding Above Assisi

The 14th-century hillside fortress that turned a 50-hectare Umbrian estate into the most quietly sought-after address above Assisi.

Some places do not need to advertise their age. Castello di Petrata is a 14th-century fortress on a Umbrian hillside five kilometres above Assisi, and the stone does the talking: towers, vaulted rooms and ancient walls that have been standing long enough to make every wedding held within them feel, against all logic, entirely new.

For couples, the estate offers the whole fortress: La Limonaia glass hall for ceremonies and feasts within the walls, panoramic terraces looking directly across the valley toward the basilica of Assisi, and smaller, more intimate rooms for the quieter moments, Sala Primavera by the fire and a vaulted wine cellar for an aperitivo among the wine racks. Up to 250 guests can celebrate across the estate, which spans 50 hectares of olive groves, orchards, truffle grounds and woodland.

The estate kitchen draws its menu from the Azienda Agricola Castello di Petrata: olive oil pressed from the grove within the gates, truffles from the tartufaia, salami, fresh pasta and bread made each morning. A zero-kilometre Umbrian table that owes its character entirely to the land it sits on.

"Stone walls seven centuries old, a glass hall for the banquet, and the basilica of Assisi catching the light below the terrace."

The exclusive couple's spa, designed for two, includes a sauna, hammam, jacuzzi, emotional showers and Kneipp paths within the fortress walls, and an outdoor jacuzzi terrace with an unobstructed view directly down over Assisi. Twenty-two rooms, from Classic Rooms to named Suites, sleep up to 60 guests within the castle: stone walls, wooden ceiling beams and wrought-iron beds throughout.

Vows, terraces and a truffle kitchen. With La Limonaia glass hall, panoramic terraces for 250, farm-to-table cuisine from the estate's own grounds, an exclusive spa and 22 rooms sleeping the whole wedding party, Castello di Petrata makes a medieval Umbrian castle wedding that genuinely delivers on everything the setting promises.
