Dundas Castle

The Auld Keep is the reason to come. Six hundred years old, its medieval rooms are all original stonework and vaulted ceilings, and from its roof you look out to the Forth bridges. This is the castle at its most atmospheric: vows beneath the vaults of the Great Hall, candlelight thrown up the stone, a room that has held gatherings since long before anyone thought to call them weddings. It does not need dressing to feel momentous. It simply is.

Ceremonies take the shape of the day. In the Auld Keep Great Hall, up to a hundred and ten sit beneath the vaults. In the walled courtyard, up to two hundred gather around the stone fountain, and on the lawn the castle stands behind the couple as they marry. There is almost always a piper, and often the Scottish traditions of the quaich, the shared cup, and the handfasting, the binding of hands, so the day feels rooted in the place and the country.

Then the feasting, which Dundas does with real theatre. For an intimate wedding, the 15th-century Stag Chamber is laid long by candlelight for up to twenty-six, a medieval room that few venues can match. For a larger party, the elegant Croquet Room in the mansion seats up to sixty for a formal wedding breakfast, and the Pavilion holds up to two hundred for a grand dinner with dancing into the night. The cooking is in-house, five-star, seasonal and modern Scottish.

Because it is exclusive use, nothing is shared and nothing is rushed. The whole castle belongs to you and your guests, and seventeen individually styled bedrooms, dressed in rich colour and antique furniture, sleep up to thirty-seven adults within the walls. The grandest room is kept for the couple. Everyone else wakes to the estate, the gardens and the loch, and the wedding spreads either side of the day into a proper Scottish weekend.

And there is the estate to fill it. Beyond the courtyard lie gardens and lawns, a loch with its own Boathouse, and Scottish pursuits from falconry to whisky tasting, so guests have somewhere to walk, something to do, and reason to stay. It is the difference between a venue you leave at midnight and a castle you live in for two days, which is what a good Scottish wedding wants to be.

For a couple who wants a real Scottish castle, close enough to Edinburgh for guests to reach easily yet secluded within its own estate, Dundas is a rare thing.
