Hedsor House

The house seen today dates from 1868, designed by the architect James Knowles for the 4th Lord Boston. An earlier house on the site burned down in 1795, and the manor itself is recorded as far back as 1166. Hedsor is known for its Italianate architecture, unusual among English country houses of the period, and a domed entrance hall in place of the more typical courtyard.

Hedsor was given to Florence and Philip Shephard as a wedding present in 1934, and the house has remained in the Shephard family ever since, now in its fourth generation. It opened to weddings and events in 2007, around the same time it appeared as a filming location in The Golden Compass.

Exclusive use means the house, Centre Hall, the sunken garden and grounds belong to one couple for the duration of the hire. No other wedding or event takes place on the estate on the same day.

Couples can marry in one of four ground-floor rooms with a civil ceremony licence, with details including carved fireplaces and garden-facing windows. Outdoor ceremonies can also be held on the manicured lawns or in the sunken garden. For couples with a qualifying connection to the parish, ceremonies can also be held at St Nicholas' Church, a restored 12th-century church a short walk from the house, with the reception at Hedsor. Hedsor also regularly hosts South Asian, Persian and other multi-faith ceremonies, including multi-day celebrations, as part of its cultural weddings programme.

A dedicated Wedding Specialist supports every couple through planning, while Hedsor's events team, including Michele and Tricia, manages the wedding day itself. At one Persian ceremony that ran through unexpected rain, the team adapted the schedule around the weather rather than treating it as a problem. The team has, by their own count, more than 200 years of combined experience in weddings and events.

Centre Hall seats up to 150 guests for the wedding breakfast, and can also host the ceremony and evening reception. Up to 100 additional guests can join for the evening, bringing total capacity to 250. Hedsor does not permit marquees, but a stretch tent can be added on the south terrace or croquet lawn for extra covered space, though music and dancing must stay indoors under the house's noise restrictions. Multi-day hire is also available for couples who want to spread the celebration across a weekend.

There are two catering routes at Hedsor. Couples can choose a curated package — The Darcy (70+ guests, from £18,950 + VAT), The Augusta (80+, from £26,950 + VAT) or The Florence (100+, from £42,950 + VAT) — each including accommodation and a dedicated Wedding Specialist, with catering handled by Hedsor's own trusted suppliers. Alternatively, Dry-Hire (from £6,450 + VAT) covers the venue only, so couples bring their own caterer, florist and other suppliers. A home-cooked breakfast is included for all overnight guests the morning after, on either route.

Twenty-six guests can stay overnight in the House itself, in bedrooms that include four-poster beds and garden views. The Hive, a self-catering three-bedroom cottage a short walk into the grounds, can also be booked, typically for the night before the wedding.

Low-noise fireworks can be added for a facility fee, with a portion donated to a local charity. Hedsor also offers a Canine Concierge package for couples who want their dog at the wedding, and The Finishing Touch, a bespoke coordination service for the final weeks of planning.
