Hever Castle

The arrival tells you where you are before anyone says a word. A road through deep Kent countryside, then the castle itself: a compact, battlemented keep of grey stone set inside a moat, reached by a wooden drawbridge and a gatehouse that still keeps its portcullis. There is no grand modern facade to soften it, no sweeping hotel driveway. It looks, from the far side of the water, almost exactly as it did when a queen of England was a girl here, and that first sight does a great deal of the work of the day.

The castle you visit today owes its second life to an American. In 1903 William Waldorf Astor bought Hever, restored the medieval keep, filled it with Tudor furniture and tapestries, and laid out the celebrated Italian Gardens beside a 38-acre lake dug for the purpose. He also built the Astor Wing, a range of Tudor-style buildings beside the castle, which is where most Hever weddings now begin. The result is a rare thing: a genuinely ancient castle that also works, comfortably, as a place to hold a modern wedding.

It is worth knowing whose story you are stepping into. Anne Boleyn spent her childhood at Hever, and it was here, in the years that followed, that Henry VIII courted her, riding down from London to press a suit that would remake the country. The castle still displays two of her illuminated prayer books, one carrying her signature, and rooms are hung with Tudor portraits of the people who shaped that moment. Few couples marry anywhere with a past this specific, or this famous, folded into the walls around them.

There are three ways to marry here, and each has its own character. The Astor Wing's Tudor Suite is the most flexible: its Sitting Room is licensed for the ceremony, seating 48 with a dozen more standing, and the adjoining Dining Room seats 60 for the wedding breakfast, all framed by mullioned bay windows over the moat. It is intimate, warm and self-contained, and the wing can be taken for exclusive use, all year round.

For couples who want the castle itself, Hever opens its historic rooms on select dates. The ceremony takes place in the Inner Hall, panelled in richly carved Italian walnut, and the wedding breakfast is served in the Great Hall, on long banqueting tables beneath the Minstrels Gallery and a stone fireplace crowned with the Boleyn coat of arms. Forty guests dine where the Boleyns once did. A Castle ceremony or breakfast is a supplement from £1,000, and it is the most atmospheric room a Kent wedding can offer.

And then there is the garden. The Italian Garden Loggia, a columned stone pavilion beside the lake, hosts ceremonies and drinks in the open air, with the water spread out beyond and the piazza opening in front of it. It is a piece of Edwardian theatre, all balustrades and statuary, built to impress and still doing so. On a still summer evening, with guests seated between the columns and the lake catching the light, it is one of the loveliest outdoor settings in the county.

The gardens are not a backdrop so much as a second venue, and they change with the year. Spring brings rhododendron and azalea in great banks of pink; early summer drapes the pergola walks in wisteria and then in roses; autumn turns the whole estate to copper and gold, reflected in the lake. Between the ceremony and the meal, couples wander out for photographs among the topiary, the yew walks and the stone archways, and the grounds give a Hever wedding a sense of space that walled venues never quite manage.

When the light goes, the party moves. Evening receptions are held in the Moat Restaurant or a sailcloth tipi on the Tudor Lawn, each for up to 120, or in the Guthrie Pavilion for as many as 220, so the celebration can grow well beyond the intimate ceremony. Things run to a gentle rhythm: the reception opens around half past seven, the bar stays on until half past eleven, the band or DJ plays until a quarter to midnight, and fireworks or a corridor of sparklers send the couple off into the dark beside the castle.

Catering is handled in-house, by the estate's own chefs, with seasonal modern British menus from £92.50 a head and drinks packages from £53.50, plus a complimentary tasting for the couple. Children's menus, canapes and an evening buffet come on request, dietary, vegetarian and vegan requirements are all catered for, and table linen, china and glassware are included, so the food is one fewer supplier to chase and one fewer thing to worry about on the day.

What really sets the day apart, though, is that nobody has to leave. There are 18 individually decorated bed and breakfast bedrooms in the Astor Wing, and, subject to availability, nine more in the Anne Boleyn Wing, with Medley Court, a self-catering cottage sleeping up to eight, for a longer stay. The wedding party wakes the morning after beside the moat and gardens, breakfast is served in the wing, and the whole thing stretches comfortably across a weekend rather than being squeezed into a single afternoon.

For all its remove, Hever is easy to reach. It sits three miles south-east of Edenbridge in the Weald of Kent, off the B2026 between Sevenoaks and East Grinstead. Gatwick Airport is about thirty minutes away by car, and there are two railway stations close by: Hever, a one-mile country walk from the gates, and Edenbridge Town, three miles by taxi, both served from London Victoria and London Bridge. Guests get deep countryside and a real castle without a difficult journey to find it.
