About Leeds Castle

The moated island castle in the Kentish countryside, nine centuries of royal history, six queens, and five distinct wedding spaces for 16 to 500 guests.

A medieval castle on a moated island in the Kentish countryside, the residence of six queens, home to nine centuries of royal history, and known internationally as the Loveliest Castle in the World. Five licensed wedding spaces, 550 acres of gardens and parkland, and a 12-acre moat that has no equal in English heritage venues.

Leeds Castle stands on two small islands within a 12-acre moat in the Kentish countryside, a castle so singular in its beauty that it has been known for generations as the Loveliest Castle in the World.

Its story begins around 857 AD, when a Saxon manor was first built on this spot; by 1119 it had been transformed into a Norman stone fortress, and by 1278 it was in the possession of King Edward I, whose queen, Eleanor of Castile, made it a royal residence that would remain in the crown for three hundred years. Six medieval queens of England held the castle: Eleanor of Castile, Margaret of France, Isabella of France, Anne of Bohemia, Joan of Navarre, and Catherine de Valois. Henry VIII later transformed the castle for Catherine of Aragon in 1519.

In 1926 it was purchased by Olive, Lady Baillie, who invested a fortune in its restoration and received the most glamorous houseguests of the century: Edward VIII, Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, before bequeathing the entire estate to the Leeds Castle Foundation on her death in 1974.

Today the castle is available for weddings across five distinct spaces, each with its own character: the castle itself for up to 120 guests at an evening reception, the Maiden's Tower for elegant celebrations of up to 100, the intimate Battel Hall for just 16 at dinner, the Fairfax Barn for evening receptions of up to 180, and the estate lawns with a marquee for grand celebrations of up to 500 guests. The 12-acre moat surrounds every ceremony. The falcons still fly over the parkland. The maze of 2,400 yew trees is still standing. And 900 years of history are still in the walls.

Castle State Bedroom, Battel Hall, Hellebore Bedroom, Battel Hall, Myrtle Bedroom, Maiden's Tower Deluxe Double10 Suites

Leeds Castle offers a small and exclusive collection of overnight accommodation for wedding parties, set across the estate. Within the castle itself, the Castle Wedding package includes overnight bedrooms on Castle Island: one Castle Bridal State Bedroom, two Castle Classic bedrooms, and seven Castle State bedrooms, ten rooms in all, available only as part of the Castle Wedding package and rarely open to the public otherwise. They are among the most extraordinary rooms in which to spend a wedding night in England, within walls where medieval queens once lived, with views across the moat.

The Maiden's Tower Deluxe Double offers a private five-star island retreat. The Lakeside Lodges provide contemporary luxury on the water's edge from £259 per night. Across the parkland, seven self-catering holiday cottages accommodate groups from two to twelve: Weir Cottage (waterside, couples), Knights' Cottage (Edwardian, six guests), Keeper's House (ten guests, dog-friendly), River Lodge (twelve guests, waterfront), The Oast, Battel Hall Cottage, and the Guard's House.

Overnight estate stays include complimentary daytime castle admission and out-of-hours grounds access for staying guests.

The Castle View Restaurant is the estate's principal dining destination: a room with views across the moat to the castle, serving seasonal British cuisine from local and Kentish ingredients for lunch, dinner, and a celebrated afternoon tea (Monday–Saturday at 2pm).

For weddings, Leeds Castle works with a handpicked network of preferred caterers rather than a single in-house catering operation, allowing the wedding breakfast menu to be tailored precisely to the couple's vision: from traditional British country house dining to Asian and cultural banquet programmes. Lady Baillie's founding philosophy: that guests of this castle should receive the finest dining and the highest standard of service. This guides the approach.

The Castle View Restaurant also hosts regular themed evenings: Lady Baillie-inspired House Party dinners, wine flight tastings, Murder Mystery evenings, and Christmas Casino nights throughout the year.
